Prof. Phalandwa Abraham Mulaudzi

Phalandwa Abraham Mulaudzi is a Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of
South Africa (Unisa) and also the former Head of the Institute for African Renaissance
Studies. His current research focus is on how indigenous music reflects cultural practices
among the indigenous people in Southern Africa.
He published five books, several book chapters, and articles within a period of ten years on
topics such as cross-border language varieties; music and culture; cultural perceptions and
linguistic implications of traditional marriages in indigenous communities; culture and
election, and the linguistic implications of ethnopolitical stability in Kenya and Rwanda.
In addition to published research, he has been engaged in collegial and research-related
responsibilities. He serves as the external examiner of various institutions in South Africa.
Professor Mulaudzi was the National Coordinator of the African Language Association of
Southern African (ALASA) from 2003–2009, acting treasurer from 2008–2009, and
chairperson from 2009–2013.
Currently, he is a C2 rated scholar. As a researcher, he has traveled internationally to attend
conferences and has also presented more than 88 conference papers. 13 Ph.D. students and 16
masters’ students completed their studies in African Languages under his supervision during
the past ten years.
