Prof. Asenath Sigot

Personal Data: Born in Kaptumo, Nandi County on 15th January 1954. A third born in a family of 12.
Was Married to late Prof. Ochong Okelo and have three children.
Education: After primary education, joined Kapsabet Girls’ High School for secondary education/
Odinary Level from 1969 to 1972. Joined Alliance Girls’ High School for Upper Seconday/ Advanced
Level in 1973 to 1974. Proceeded for undergraduate education in the United States of America from
1975 to 1978 and graduated with BSc. Nutrition and Education in 1978 and MSc. Home Economics in
1979 from Central Missouri State University. In 1982 joined Kenyatta University as a Tutorial Fellow
and enrolled for PhD studies in Administration, Planning and Curriculum Development where she
graduated with a PhD in 1988.
Professional Development: First appointed high school teacher at AIC Kessup Girls Secondary
School in 1979. Then in 1980 joined Kapropita Girls’ Secondary School as Deputy Head Teacher and
taught A level foods and nutrition. In 1982, joined Kenyatta University as Tutorial Fellow and enrolled
for PhD studies. Graduated with PhD In 1988. She rose from Tutorial Fellow to Senior Lecturer.
Joined Maseno University on promotion as Associate Professor in Home Science and Food
Technology from 1991 to 2003. Was promoted to full professor in 1998.
Prof. Sigot was appointed Deputy Principal, Academic Affairs at Western University College of
Science and Technology (now Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology) in 2003. Was
appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs in 2007 to 2013. Appointed Ag. Vice
Chancellor in 2013 for 7 months and in 2019 for 9 months.
Research Projects: In 2008, Initiated three major research projects on Indigenous Vegetables,
Microalgae Spirulina and Mushroom Cultivation and Utilization. Currently, the ongoing research
projects have major emphasis on Mushroom and Spirulina value addition that has resulted in the
development of new innovative products. Three of the new products have been certified fit for human
consumption. One of the products, branded MMUSTMUG Porrridge is a composite milled millet flour
enriched with mushrooms, powdered milk and sweet potato flour. This is a nutritious product rich in
protein, vitamins, minerals and energy, designed to meet the growing demand for healthy food products
with the ability to curb malnutrition and lifestyle diseases. It is a unique product that finds its niche
defined by its unique flavor and enhanced nutrient content.
Publications: Have published several peer reviewed articles in journals and co-authored two books.
Teaching: Teaches both Undergraduate and Postgraduate students and have supervised several Masters
and PhD candidates.
Awards: International Friendship Award in 1979 and Distinguished International Alumni Award in
2008.
National Appointments: Commissioner with the Commission for Higher Education 1999-2004.
Chairperson of Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, 1999-2005
Present Status: Professor of Nutritional Sciences at Masinde Muliro University of Science and
Technology.
